Why steel shelving tips over
Tip-over is about geometry, not just weight. A tall, narrow, shallow unit has a high centre of gravity and a small footprint, so a modest sideways or forward force can lift the back feet. Our bolt-together steel frames come in heights of 1.8m, 2.0m and 2.4m, with depths of 0.5m or 0.6m. A 2.4m upright on a 0.5m deep base is a tall, slim tower, and that is exactly the shape most likely to lean forward when the top shelves are loaded or when someone tugs at a stuck carton. Anchoring converts a freestanding tower into a fixed structure that borrows stability from your slab or wall.
Work out your height-to-depth ratio first
A simple, widely used rule of thumb is that any freestanding shelving unit taller than roughly four times its depth should be anchored. Divide the height by the depth: a 2.0m high unit at 0.5m deep is a 4:1 ratio, and a 2.4m high unit at 0.5m deep is around 4.8:1, both at or above the threshold. A 1.8m unit on a deeper 0.6m base is a gentler 3:1 and more forgiving, though anchoring is still the surest fix. Choosing a deeper 0.6m frame over a 0.5m one, where floor space allows, gives you a lower ratio and a more stable base before you even reach for a drill.
How to anchor to a concrete floor
Fixing to a concrete slab is the strongest option because the anchor pulls against the full mass of the floor. Work through it in order:
- Position and level the unit. Set the fully assembled frame where it will live, hard against the wall if possible, and check the uprights are plumb. Pack any low feet with thin steel or plastic shims so all feet sit flat.
- Choose the right anchor. Use masonry expansion or sleeve anchors rated for concrete, commonly sold as dynabolts or concrete screw anchors. Plastic wall plugs and general timber screws are not suitable for a slab. Anchoring hardware is usually not supplied with flat-pack shelving, so buy fixings sized to the holes in the feet.
- Mark and drill. Mark through the foot holes, move the unit aside, and drill with a masonry bit in a hammer drill to the depth the anchor specifies. Vacuum or blow the dust out of each hole so the anchor grips properly.
- Fix and tighten. Reposition the frame, drop the anchors through the feet, and tighten to the anchor's stated torque. Two anchors on the two front feet are the priority, since forward tipping is the main hazard; four is better on a 2.4m unit.
Anchoring to a wall when you cannot drill the floor
If your slab is tiled, epoxy-coated, or you simply do not want holes in the floor, brace the top of the unit back to the wall instead. Fix an L-bracket or a fixing strap between an upright near the top and the wall behind. Into brick or concrete, use a masonry anchor; into a timber-framed, plasterboard-lined wall, locate the stud with a detector and drive a structural screw into solid timber, never into plasterboard alone. Because the brace sits high on the frame, it directly counters the forward lean that causes tip-over. Load it so it cannot tip in the first place
Good loading habits do half the work before any anchor is fitted. Three rules matter most:
- Heaviest items on the lowest shelves. Keeping mass low drops the centre of gravity and makes the bay far harder to lift off its back feet. Reserve the top shelves for light, bulky, occasional-use items.
- Spread the load, do not concentrate it. Our light-duty shelving is rated to 200kg per shelf and our heavy-duty range to 300kg per shelf, but those figures assume the weight is spread evenly across the shelf. A 300kg engine part parked on one corner behaves very differently from 300kg of evenly stacked boxes.
- Do not overfill the top. Even a well-anchored unit is easier and safer to use when the top third stays light.

Light-duty units use 0.6mm uprights and beams, while the heavy-duty range steps up to 0.7mm steel, all powder-coated, with four adjustable shelves per bay so you can set shelf heights to suit the load rather than forcing tall items onto a high, unstable shelf.
Do you need a certified rack at home?
For household garages and light-commercial storage, generally no. Formal racking certification is written for industrial pallet racking that is loaded and unloaded by forklift, a very different environment from a home garage. A domestic user storing tools, cartons, camping gear and paint tins typically does not need a certified rack. What genuinely keeps you safe is honest assembly, loading within the per-shelf rating, and anchoring anything tall. That is the same practical standard you would apply to sturdier steel shelving from Bunnings, Kmart, Officeworks or Stratco, and it is worth spending a few dollars on the right concrete anchors to get it right.
