Why a bigger advertised number is not always more shelf
Per-shelf ratings across this market are not measured the same way, so comparing the headline number alone will mislead you. Three things to check before you treat two numbers as comparable:
- Is it per shelf or per unit? A rack advertised on a four-figure total is describing the whole unit across all its shelves. Divide by the shelf count before comparing it with a per-shelf figure.
- Is the load evenly distributed? Every rating in this category assumes a uniformly distributed load. Concentrating the same mass in the middle of a span is a different test, and it is the one that bends beams.
- What is the deck? A wire deck and a steel deck of the same nominal rating behave differently under a point load such as a jack stand or an engine block on a pallet.
The practical consequence: for a normal domestic garage, shelf depth and run length usually matter more than headline capacity. Very little in a home garage approaches 300 kg on a single shelf — a full set of four alloy wheels and tyres is roughly 80–100 kg, and a pallet of tiles that would trouble a 300 kg shelf will not fit through most garage doors on a pallet anyway. If you are regularly loading past 300 kg per shelf on an evenly distributed basis, you are into industrial racking territory and should be specifying against that standard instead.
