Lockable Steel Stationery Cupboard for an Office in Australia

Grey and white Steel Power Metal File Cabinet 1.85m with two hinged doors, a central key-lock handle and adjustable steel shelves

Steel Power Shelving Team |

For most small offices, the practical stationery or file cupboard is a lockable two-door steel cupboard about 1.85m tall, 0.9m wide and 0.4m deep, with adjustable shelves. Steel Power Shelving has two that fit that brief: the Metal File Cabinet 1.85m in grey and white, with lockable doors, at AUD $285 as listed in October 2026, and the black Heavy Duty File Cabinet 1.85m, the same size and price, rated at 30–50kg per shelf (evenly distributed). Buy online at steelpowershelving.com.au with Australia-wide delivery, or collect from the Brisbane warehouse at Willawong.

A cupboard this size stands on about 0.36 square metres of floor yet stores on several levels; the photos of the grey and white model show four adjustable shelves above the base.

What fits on each shelf (estimates)

Neither 1.85m listing publishes internal dimensions, so this section is an estimate, not a specification. Basis: a usable shelf roughly 0.85m wide by 0.35m deep, and five levels (base plus four shelves) about 0.33m apart. Measure the internal depth, or ask before ordering: the external depth is 0.4m, so the inside is shallower, and any box deeper than the internal depth won't fit with the doors shut.

Item Typical size and weight (estimate) Per shelf by space (estimate) Shelf load (estimate)
A4 copy paper, loose reams 297mm × 210mm × about 50mm; about 2.5kg per 500-sheet ream of 80gsm 15–20 reams (3–4 stacks, 5 high, long edge front to back) About 37–50kg
A4 copy paper, 5-ream cartons About 0.3m × 0.22m × 0.26m (varies by brand); about 12.5kg 3 side by side About 37kg
A4 lever-arch files About 0.32m tall × 0.29m deep × 70–80mm spine; 2–3kg full 10–11 upright, with the shelf above raised to clear 0.32m About 20–33kg
Archive boxes Commonly about 0.4m × 0.3m × 0.25–0.3m (check yours); 10–15kg full 2, long side across the width About 20–30kg

Weight sanity check (estimate): paper is the heaviest thing most offices store. At about 2.5kg a ream (500 sheets at roughly 5g each), 12 reams is about 30kg and 20 reams about 50kg, so a shelf full of paper can reach the top of the black cabinet's 30–50kg rating before it runs out of space. As a rule of thumb, plan to the lower figure, around 30kg a shelf, and keep paper on the base and lower shelves. The grey and white listing doesn't state a per-shelf load, so ask Steel Power before filling it with bulk paper. More detail is in our 1.85m cabinet spec and FAQ.

Tall cupboard vs low cabinet vs drawer unit

When floor space is tight, height is the cheapest storage you have. Here is how the 1.85m cupboards compare with Steel Power's two low lockable options.

1.85m two-door cupboard Lockable Metal Storage Cabinet with Shelf 2 Drawer Metal Storage Cabinet
Size (H × W × D) 1.85m × 0.9m × 0.4m 0.89m × 0.915m × 0.6m 0.315m × 0.61m × 0.56m

Storage levels 5 (base plus four shelves, per the grey and white photos) 2 (base plus one adjustable shelf) 2 drawers

Stated load Black: 30–50kg per shelf, evenly distributed. Grey and white: not stated 30kg per layer 30kg per layer
Best for Paper, files and archive boxes on a small footprint Bench-height storage, with the top free for a printer Small supplies under a bench
Price (as listed in October 2026) $285 $175 $145

The tall cupboard gives the most storage per square metre of floor. The low cabinet is 0.6m deep, so it takes more floor, but everything sits at bench height with less tip risk. We compare the low options in small lockable metal cabinets under $200. Beside a desk, the 3 Drawer Mobile Pedestal Filing Cabinet ($160 as listed in October 2026, 600mm high × 390mm wide × 500mm deep) has two stationery drawers, one A4 filing drawer and central locking.

Office placement and safety

  • Door-swing clearance. Two doors on a 0.9m-wide cabinet are about 0.45m each (derived: half the width), so each swings roughly 0.45m into the room. As a rule of thumb, leave about 1m clear in front and keep the swing out of doorways.
  • Anchor tall cabinets to the wall. A unit 1.85m tall and 0.4m deep can tip forward if it is top-heavy or someone leans on an open door. Use fixings that suit your wall type.
  • Heavy items low. Paper cartons and archive boxes on the base and lowest shelves, light stationery up top.
  • Keep it off damp slabs. In ground-floor and warehouse offices, avoid spots where the concrete gets wet; paper and cardboard soak up moisture.
  • Key management. In a shared office, decide who holds the working key and where the spare lives, for example with the office manager and a spare in a separate locked place, never inside the cupboard or taped to it.

For anchoring steps and lock tips, see how to secure a metal storage cabinet.

Who a lockable steel stationery cupboard suits

  • Small offices: paper, toner, envelopes and lever-arch files behind one lock.
  • Clinics and practices: non-confidential stationery, forms and consumable supplies. For confidential records, a cabinet key lock is privacy and deterrence, not a safe.
  • School and club offices: registration paperwork, event materials and supplies shared by staff or volunteers.
  • Trade and warehouse offices: dockets, manuals and spare PPE. For hi-vis or jackets, the Heavy Duty Metal Storage Closet Cabinet 1.85m has the same size and $285 price, and its photos show shelves on one side and a hanging rail on the other.
  • Home offices: work papers out of reach of kids and visitors; see our home-office metal cabinet guide.

Where to buy a steel stationery cupboard in Australia

Most buyers choose between three kinds of seller:

  • Office furniture suppliers carry broad office ranges, from filing cabinets to desks, and often offer fit-out services.
  • Hardware stores let you see a cabinet in person and take it home the same day; their ranges often lean towards garage storage.
  • Online steel-storage specialists such as Steel Power sell steel cupboards and cabinets, with dimensions and prices on each listing, delivered or collected.

Whoever you buy from, compare:

  1. Dimensions, including internal depth.
  2. Lock: keyed or not, and whether one lock secures both doors.
  3. Shelf rating: stated or not. If not, ask.
  4. Warranty: length and what it covers.
  5. Delivery to upper floors: Steel Power's 1.85m cabinets weigh 44–48kg, so check stairs and lifts.
  6. Installation: price per unit and whether packaging is taken away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy a lockable steel stationery cupboard in Australia?

Office furniture suppliers, hardware stores and online steel-storage specialists all sell them. Steel Power Shelving sells the Metal File Cabinet 1.85m in grey and white, with lockable doors, and the black Heavy Duty File Cabinet 1.85m, both AUD $285 as listed in October 2026, online with Australia-wide delivery or for pickup from its Brisbane warehouse in Willawong.

What size stationery cupboard does a small office need?

For most small offices, a two-door cupboard about 1.85m tall, 0.9m wide and 0.4m deep. It stands on about 0.36 square metres of floor, and adjustable shelves can be set for reams, lever-arch files or archive boxes.

How much weight can each shelf in a steel stationery cupboard hold?

Check the listing. Steel Power's black Heavy Duty File Cabinet 1.85m is rated at 30–50kg per shelf, evenly distributed; the grey and white listing doesn't state a per-shelf load. As an estimate, 12 reams of 80gsm A4 weigh about 30kg, so spread paper across the lower shelves.

Will lever-arch files and archive boxes fit in a 0.4m-deep cupboard?

Usually, but measure first, because 0.4m is the external depth. As an estimate, A4 lever-arch files about 0.29m deep fit upright, roughly 10–11 per shelf. Archive boxes usually need turning so the long side runs across the width, and anything deeper than the internal depth won't fit.

Is a lockable steel cupboard secure enough for confidential records?

A cabinet key lock gives privacy and deters casual access, but it is not a safe. For confidential patient, client or staff records, check what your privacy obligations require and control who holds the keys.

Is there a lockable filing option that fits under a desk?

Yes. Steel Power's 3 Drawer Mobile Pedestal Filing Cabinet (600mm high × 390mm wide × 500mm deep) has two stationery drawers, one A4 filing drawer and central locking, and was listed at AUD $160 in October 2026.

Can Steel Power install a cupboard in an upstairs office?

Yes, in its listed service areas. Cabinet installation is per unit with rubbish removal included: $55 ground floor or $85 upstairs in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast, and $65 ground floor or $95 upstairs in Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong, as listed in October 2026.

The short version

For a small office, clinic, school office or warehouse office, a lockable two-door steel cupboard about 1.85m × 0.9m × 0.4m is the practical default. Measure the internal depth, keep paper low, anchor it to the wall and decide who holds the spare key.
