Garage Pegboard Accessories and Wall Layout: A Practical Guide

Steel Power 2.0m steel pegboard panel with hooks for 0.6m-deep garage shelving

Steel Power Shelving Team |

The most useful garage pegboard set-up is a strip of hand tools hung at working height, directly above or beside the shelving and bench you already use. Steel Power's steel pegboards are designed to mount on Steel Power shelving and workbench frames rather than straight onto the wall, they come in lengths that match the shelving bays (1.2m, 1.5m and 2.0m nominal), and each panel includes 5 hooks. Add 10cm, 15cm or 20cm hooks for the tools you reach for every day, and keep heavy power tools on the shelves below.

This guide covers which pegboard fits which unit, what each accessory is for, and how to plan a pegboard zone along a garage wall using real panel sizes. All sizes and prices come from the current product pages, with prices as at 31/10/2026.

How Steel Power pegboards mount

Each Steel Power pegboard is a steel panel made for a particular frame. The product pages describe three positions: back-mounted along the rear of a shelving bay, side-mounted on the end frame of a bay, and fitted to a Steel Power workbench. In practice that means the pegboard "wall" in a Steel Power garage is built off the shelving line itself. The frame carries the panel, there is no separate wall fixing to plan around plasterboard and studs, and the panel moves with the shelving if you rearrange the garage later.

Frame dimensions and mounting points differ between brands, so every panel listing notes that compatibility with other manufacturers' shelving is not guaranteed, even where the sizes look the same. If you are adding a pegboard to shelving you already own, check its depth (0.5m or 0.6m) first, and contact the Steel Power team if you are unsure.

Which pegboard fits which unit

Pegboard Nominal size (actual length) Fits Hooks included Price (as at 31/10/2026)

Back pegboard 2.0m × 0.35m (1.95m) Back of 0.5m-deep Steel Power shelving 5 from $45
Steel pegboard panel 1.2m × 0.5m (1.15m) 0.6m-deep Steel Power shelving 5 from $45

Steel pegboard panel 2.0m × 0.5m (1.95m) 0.6m-deep Steel Power shelving 5 from $65
Side pegboard 0.5m × 0.9m End frame of 0.5m-deep shelving 5 from $40
Side pegboard 0.6m × 0.9m End frame of 0.6m-deep shelving 5 from $50
Workbench pegboard panel 1.2m × 0.5m (1.15m) Selected Steel Power workbench systems only 5 from $55
Workbench pegboard panel 1.5m × 0.5m (1.45m) Selected Steel Power workbench systems only 5 from $65
Workbench pegboard panel 2.0m × 0.5m (1.95m) Selected Steel Power workbench systems only 5 from $75

Two details are worth noticing. First, the actual length of each long panel is listed 50mm shorter than its nominal size, so plan with the actual figure when you are working to a tight gap. Second, the shelving panels and the workbench panels are separate products: the workbench panels are listed as not compatible with standard garage shelving units, so pick the panel by the frame it is going on, not by size alone.

Choosing hook lengths

Short 10cm hooks keep slim tools such as screwdrivers, pliers and spanners close to the panel so they do not swing when you grab the one next to them. 15cm hooks suit chunkier hand tools: hammers, clamps, tape measures and saws. 20cm hooks are for bulky but light items that need to hang clear of the panel, such as coiled extension leads, garden hoses, ratchet straps and helmets. Every panel comes with 5 hooks, so start with those, hang your real tools, and buy packs once you can see which length you are short of.

Keep heavy tools on the shelves

The hook and panel listings do not publish a weight rating per hook, so treat pegboard as hand-tool storage rather than a place for heavy gear. Cordless drills, grinders, battery packs and tool cases belong on a shelf, where the rating is published: 200kg per shelf on 0.5m-deep bays and 300kg per shelf on 0.6m-deep bays, evenly distributed, as listed on the product pages. Put the heaviest of them on the lower shelves, directly under the pegboard, so the whole wall stays easy to reach.

Planning a pegboard zone along your garage wall

  1. Start with the shelving line. Measure the wall you can actually use once the meter box, doors and car-door swing are allowed for. Our guide to measuring a single or double garage walks through it, including why a walk-past wall usually takes 0.5m-deep bays and a working wall takes 0.6m-deep bays.
  2. Match each panel to its bay. A 1.2m bay takes a 1.2m panel, a 1.5m bay a 1.5m panel and a 2.0m bay a 2.0m panel. Pick the 0.35m-high back pegboards for 0.5m-deep shelving and the 0.5m-high panels for 0.6m-deep shelving.
  3. Decide back, side or bench. Back pegboards turn the rear of a bay into tool storage. Side pegboards, 0.9m tall, suit the exposed end of a run, often the end nearest the door. A workbench panel sits above the work surface, where you actually use the tools.
  4. Zone by how often you use things. Daily tools go where you can reach them without stretching or bending; seasonal tools go higher or at the far end. Drawing an outline around each tool makes gaps obvious when something has not been put back.
  5. Leave the walkway clear. A loaded 20cm hook adds that much again to the depth of the bay, so keep long hooks off the sides of a run that faces a car door or a narrow path.

Two example layouts

Garage wall Wall run (nominal) What goes on it Prices (as at 31/10/2026)
Single-garage end wall (walk-past) About 2.0m 2.0m-high × 2.0m × 0.5m shelving bay (200kg per shelf as listed), a 2.0m back pegboard and a 0.5m × 0.9m side pegboard on the exposed end From $179, $45 and $40
Double-garage work wall About 4.0m 2.0m-high × 2.0m × 0.6m heavy-duty workbench with pegboard (600kg total, 300kg per shelf as listed), beside a 2.0m × 0.6m shelving bay fitted with a 2.0m steel pegboard panel From $210, $215 and $65

Check the actual assembled sizes on each product page before you commit to a tight wall, and confirm with the team that the panel you have chosen suits the exact unit you are buying.

Pegboard, shelf or cabinet: where each item belongs

Item Best spot Why
Screwdrivers, pliers, spanners, tape measures Pegboard, 10cm–15cm hooks Visible and one-hand to grab and return
Extension leads, hoses, straps 20cm hooks, or a steel shelving hook on the end of a bay They need projection to hang clear
Screws, drill bits, small parts Boxes and baskets from the accessory kit Nothing falls through or rolls off
Power tools, batteries, cases Lower and middle shelves Published per-shelf rating, easy lifting height
Chemicals and valuables A lockable cabinet such as the Lockable Metal Storage Cabinet with Shelf (from $175) Out of reach and out of sight

If you would rather have drawers, shelves and a pegboard in one lockable footprint, our guide to tool cabinets with pegboard compares that approach with a pegboard on open shelving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fix a Steel Power pegboard straight onto my garage wall?

The product pages describe Steel Power pegboards as mounting onto compatible Steel Power shelving frames or workbench systems, not as wall-mounted panels. Build the pegboard zone off your shelving or bench, and contact the team before trying any other mounting.

Which pegboard fits my shelving?

Go by depth. 0.5m-deep Steel Power shelving takes the 0.35m-high back pegboards and the 0.5m × 0.9m side pegboard. 0.6m-deep shelving takes the 0.5m-high steel pegboard panels and the 0.6m × 0.9m side pegboard. Workbench panels are for selected Steel Power workbench systems only.

Will Steel Power hooks fit a pegboard from another brand?

The hooks are designed for Steel Power pegboard panels. Hole size, spacing and panel thickness vary between manufacturers, so fit on another brand's board is not guaranteed even if it looks similar; check with the team before ordering in bulk.

How much weight can a pegboard hook hold?

The listings do not publish a per-hook weight rating, so we do not quote one. Use pegboard for hand tools and light, bulky items, and keep power tools, batteries and cases on a shelf with a published per-shelf rating.

Do the pegboards come with hooks?

Yes. Every shelving, side and workbench pegboard listed above includes 5 hooks. Extra hooks are sold in 10cm, 15cm and 20cm lengths, in packs of 1 to 20.

Does the accessory kit need drilling?

No. The 12-piece kit uses magnetic pins and clips plus adhesive shelves, boxes and racks, and the listing describes it as needing no drilling.
